The Art Volt Collection (AVC) is a not-for-profit artwork rental and sales service at Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts that will be launched by the end of May 2022. The AVC aims to help recent alumni launch their career by showcasing their work, connecting them with art patrons and providing them compensation for their creative productions by introducing them to the commercial market. Every year, approximately 200 new artworks by 40 alumni are added to the AVC, following a call for submission. Artworks have an estimated value of 250$ to 4000$, with an average value of 1000$. Alumni who have completed their BFA, MFA or PhD are eligible, as long as they graduate in June or November of the given year or have graduated in the past 5 years.

The Art Volt Collection (AVC) is now accepting applications for the position of Art Advisor. Concordia Fine Arts alumni who have professional interests in gallery management, art dealership, artist management and/or curatorial practices are encouraged to apply.

The Advisor position is a one-year contract of 400 hours (approximately 1 day/week), for a value of $8400 (equivalent to $21/hour). A mandatory training will take place at the beginning of the contract that will start by the end of March 2022.

Role and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head, Art Volt Collection, the incumbent will participate in the day-to-day activities of the AVC, keeping the collection database updated, working with artists and meeting with clients to advise them on artwork selections.

  • Contribute to writing artist profiles and artwork descriptions
  • Upload text and images to the Collection database and perform updates as required
  • Communicate with artists to collect information and coordinate artwork sales and rentals
  • Meet with clients and advise them on artwork selection
  • Perform follow-ups with clients
  • Create space mock-ups (digital or physical)
  • Package and prepare artworks for transportation
  • Participate in the installation and deinstallation of artworks
  • Assist the Head, AVC with the curation of exhibitions
  • Assist the Head, AVC with administrative tasks: invoicing, producing reports, etc.
  • Assist the Head, AVC with activities related to outreach and promotion of the AVC
  • Contribute to the organization of networking events and be present for such events (on evenings and/or weekends, occasionally)
  • Participate in various Art Volt activities and events
  • Refine your knowledge of the art world, art market and management, curatorship
  • Gain access to other Art Volt programs (i.e. professional trainings)
  • Develop a network of peers and professionals within your field

Application criteria
Applicants must be registered for graduation or have graduated from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, within the last three years.

Qualifications and competencies:
  • Experience in developing or curating exhibitions and/or events, critical writing and/or working with emerging artists
  • Very good spoken and written English (level 5). Able to speak and write fluently and persuasively to cater to diverse audiences, including the ability to write about creative practices and productions; create, compose and edit correspondence, written materials and/or reports and presentations.
  • Spoken and written French are a strong asset.
  • Strong interest in contemporary art and a demonstrated interest in learning about the Montreal art scene and art market
  • Experience in installing and uninstalling artworks is a strong asset
  • Technical competency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite or other graphic design software
  • Good organizational skill and autonomy; ability to be detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with and service a wide range of individuals.
  • Comfortable with numbers; interest in learning about budgeting, invoicing and administrative tasks.
